Does a monthly rental include cleaning? How often do you service it? These are two of the most common questions renters ask.
The short version: weekly service is standard on long rentals, and busy sites need more. Here is how to tell what your site needs.
How often do you service a porta potty on a job site?
Most job-site porta potties in Bellingham and across Whatcom and Skagit counties are serviced once a week. That is the standard for small crews and long-term rentals. Larger crews, long shifts or hot weather can fill a tank faster, so those sites need two or more visits per week.
Long-term rentals bill per 28-day cycle with weekly service included. The cycle renews until you call or text for pickup.
- Small crew, normal shifts: weekly service usually works.
- Large crew or extra shifts: add a second weekly visit or another unit.
- Seasonal swings: crews often grow during framing and finish work. Adjust as the job changes.
What does a porta potty service visit include?
A standard service visit includes pumping out the waste tank, washing down the inside, restocking toilet paper and hand sanitizer, and adding fresh deodorizer to the tank. In Bellingham's winter months, the visit can also include a winter additive to keep the tank from freezing. Hand washing stations get refilled with fresh water and soap.
- Pump-out: The waste tank is emptied into the service truck.
- Wash-down: The seat, walls, floor and urinal are cleaned.
- Restock: Toilet paper and sanitizer are refilled.
- Odor treatment: Fresh deodorizer goes into the tank.
- Check: The tech looks for damage, a stuck door or a leaning unit.
Event units come clean and stocked. You don't have to clean anything before pickup.
What does Washington law say about servicing porta potties?
Washington's construction rule, WAC 296-155-140, requires toilets to be serviced on a regular schedule. The waste tank must be sized so it does not fill past half its volume before the next scheduled service. If a Bellingham job site's tanks are more than half full by service day, add a visit or a unit.
The half-volume rule is the most useful check on a busy site. Lift the seat a day or two before service and look. If the tank is past halfway, you need more capacity.
- The rule took effect July 1, 2025.
- It also sets toilet counts by crew size and the 200-foot distance rule.
- Tepid wash water between 70 and 100°F is required at construction sites.
See Washington job-site toilet rules for the full table.

Can I skip weekly servicing if I barely use the unit?
A lightly used porta potty, like one on a Bellingham home remodel, still benefits from regular service. Paper runs out, sanitizer dries up and odor builds, even with low use. Ask about your service schedule when you book. On job sites, Washington rules still require regular service no matter how light the use.
Light use is common on remodels, cabin lots and seasonal farm work. Tell us how many people will use the unit and how often.
- Weekly service is included in long-term rentals.
- Changing the schedule doesn't change what is included in the cycle.
- Freezing weather is a good reason to keep regular visits.
Do you service units during a multi-day event?
Multi-day events in Bellingham, such as reunions, festivals or tournaments, often need service during the rental. A unit that handles a one-day party may fill on day two of a weekend festival. Plan service between days, ideally early morning before guests arrive, and add units for peak crowds.
- Tell us the number of days, guests per day and hours.
- Mention alcohol and food. Both raise use.
- Pick a service time when the site is quiet and trucks can get in.
- Keep a service lane clear of tents, cars and vendor booths.
See festival porta potty rental for larger events.
What are the signs a porta potty needs service?
A porta potty needs service when the tank is close to half full, odor is strong, paper or sanitizer has run out, or the floor and seat are dirty. On Bellingham job sites, crews may also start skipping the unit. Call or text for an extra visit before it overflows.
- Waste level near or past half the tank.
- Strong odor that lingers with the door open.
- Empty paper holder or sanitizer.
- Dirty floor, seat or urinal.
- A door that won't latch, or a leaning unit.
